Gypsy Eyed Girl

I completely believe in the idea of adorning yourself. Ever since I was conscious enough in life to be able to dress myself, life has been like one big game of dress up. There’s just something about dressing the part, or looking the way you feel that makes me happy. If you’ve even taken a glimpse at  my blog you’ve seen me in hot pink roller skates, sequins, flower crowns and blue hair. Lately though I’ve been feeling like less is more. Delicate simplicity seems so much more real and romantic to me lately. Luckily for us I stumbled across Jhanavi and all of her beautiful handmade creations at her shop Gypsy Eyed Girl. It doesn’t matter where I go if I’m wearing her pieces people notice. These Handmade Hawaiian works of art are dainty, high quality, and are stunning even from afar. If you are a Gypsy Eyed Girl, or just like to feel pretty, I would highly recommend adorning yourself in these jewels.

Spring Fever.

One of the things that helps get me through the cold dreary months of winter is dreaming about all the flirty, fun, little clothes that I can get back to wearing come spring. So naturally I have rounded up thee most darling treasures from some of my favorite shops as well as some handmade goodies that I think you are going to adore as much as I do. For me spring time is all about getting outside and exploring, but I also want to look feminine and enjoy the chance to wear something other than leggings and boots. This spring I am totally swooning over anything with a boho or 70’s vibe to it, patterned rompers, Fringe, feathers, floral, and anything crocheted. I’ve created a spring look book to showcase all of my favorite things, below each collection are all the details on where you can get each outfit for yourself! Happy Spring my loves! All About That Pixie.

FullSizeRender (1)

So most of you who know me, know that I had a pixie haircut a while back and I absolutely loved it! I am always so torn between whether to keep growing my mid length locks longer or just chop it all off! Pixie haircuts on girls can be so sweet and super simple to upkeep and style, but there are some things to think about before you make the chop yourself. I am going to share with you some tips and tricks I discovered while maintaining my cropped hair cut, and also some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when you decide to grow it back out.  Enjoy!

Things to consider:

  • Hair Type- Cropped lil pixie cuts tend to work best on medium to thick hair with a medium wave. If your hair is extremely thick, you might struggle with it looking too “fluffy,” ask your stylist to thin it out. Also curly haired pixies can be adorable, you will just need to make sure you keep it more cropped or you will start to grow a fro, which can also be darling, just depends on your personal style! The only hair type I would not recommend cutting into a pixie would be extremely straight hair, it just doesn’t give you much to style with, and can end up looking a bit limp and dull.
  • How often you’re willing to cut your hair- Although short hair is less effort from day to day, maintaining a short hair style means visiting the salon about every 5-8 weeks to keep from getting a mop top. Finding a stylist that is familiar with pixie cuts can be tricky, look for someone who is very detail oriented, I would not recommend going to just anyone. Shop around with your stylist, ask to see photos of similar hair cuts that they have done before and try to be very specific with the style you’re trying to achieve so you can both be on the same page.

The grow out:

Everyones hair is different, so how long it will take your hair to grow will obviously vary from person to person. If you’re serious about growin’ it out quick I would suggest not getting it cut or colored for about 4-6 months to start with. Go in to get it trimmed and shaped up a little might be necessary, but the more you can resist the urge to run to the salon and chop it back off the faster and longer your hair is going to grow. You are going to go through some awkward times for about 8 moths (If your have average growing hair like me.)  So here are some photos of the way my hair grew out and some tricks I used to disguise the awkwardness.

  • My favorite Pixie cut I ever got was cut by Paula Dahlberg. She was my all time favorite stylist I saw while I was maintaining my short hair. So here is how it looked shortly after I got it cut, I liked mine a little longer on top and very cropped on the sides, with feminine whispy angles and texture.

  • 6weeks after getting it cut It starts getting a little “fluffy,” I liked to use the paste from Bumble and Bumble on my hair after it was dry to keep it in place, I thought it looked best worn a little messy and most of it pushed to one side. Even with blowdrying and styling my hair usually took less than 10 minutes.

  • 9 to 10 weeks I still had not had a hair cut, the back and sides had gotten almost too long to bare. I would tuck my sideburn area behind my ear like the photo below, and at this point I would straighten my bangs to keep them from waving, and they looked cute worn across my for head still. Another trick I would do was if I felt like the back of my hair was laying really weird on my neck, I would take each side and pin it up in the back, it would create the illusion that my hair was in a pony and sometimes with a head band I actually liked the look.

  •  8 months later and I finally got it cut! My hair had gotten long enough on the sides and back that I could Finally cut it all to be a nice chin length bob. No more pixie!

  • 14 months later your hair should be about shoulder length or longer, once you get it just passed your chin it’s smooth sailing, I would recommend getting it cut every 8-12 weeks to keep the dead ends in check and your hair feeling healthy.

Having a cropped hair style can be so sassy and fun. You only live once so why not experiment with your hair? You will never discover your best styles if you don’t mix it up every once and a while! I hope this helps some of you in your own hair journey. You can follow me on instagram @missammyjean for more hair posts and tips.

Cute hair for the lazy girl.

Even though I’m a hairstylist I like to spend very little time actually doing my own hair. I seriously wear headbands and hats  basically every other day. Lately I have been getting requests to make a tutorial on my fav lazy day hair style, so here it is guys. This is my first tutorial, like ever. So please forgive the poor quality, It will only improve as I keep doing them, let me know if there are any other hair or makeup tutorials that ya’ll might find useful! Enjoy xo

Tips and tricks: If your hair is long (then I am jealous of you) you may need to just tuck all that hair into your headband more than once, and If you have shorter hair than mine, you can always pin your hairs that wont stay tucked into your headband. Even tough I’m not using it in the video, Hair spray is definitely a necessity for this hair style, my all time fav is Kin. Cause it smells like a dream and doesn’t make my hair sticky
